OTX is an open, community-driven platform for exchanging threat data, originally founded by AlienVault. Users share so-called pulses — bundled indicators on a campaign or threat — and can adopt them into their own tools. OTX is among the best-known freely accessible collection points for indicators.
History & facts. OTX was launched by AlienVault and is today continued under the provider LevelBlue. The platform organises threat knowledge into pulses that combine indicators such as addresses, domains and file hashes with context on actors and campaigns. Via interfaces this data can be fed into detection systems; the large, open community provides breadth but also fluctuating quality.
Outlook & recommendation. Open exchange platforms thrive on participation — their value rises with the number and reliability of contributors. At the same time: broad community feeds contain noise and stale indicators. Anyone using OTX should not block the data unfiltered but treat it as one source among several, correlate it against their own telemetry and assess it by relevance.
