TLP:AMBER — TLP:AMBER

TLP:AMBER marks information that may be passed on only in a limited way — within one's own organisation and to customers or clients who need to act for protection. It is the level for sensitive threat data meant to take effect without becoming public. The tightening TLP:AMBER+STRICT limits sharing to one's own organisation.

History & facts. AMBER is the most common level in practice for operationally useful but sensitive information: it may be passed to the people who need it to protect the organisation and its customers — but no further. With TLP 2.0 the variant TLP:AMBER+STRICT was introduced, which expressly restricts sharing to one's own organisation, without including customers. Outlook & recommendation. With AMBER, the precise interpretation of the circle of recipients is decisive: „need to know“ does not mean „interesting to many“. In case of doubt the stricter reading is the safe one — and where a piece of information is relevant to several customers, it should be clarified in advance whether AMBER or AMBER+STRICT applies. A misunderstood act of sharing is the most common breach of the TLP.
