Mobile forensics is the forensic investigation of smartphones, tablets and similar devices. It is particularly demanding because these devices are heavily encrypted, closed and vendor-specific and contain a wealth of sensitive data — from messages through locations to app traces. Access is often the biggest hurdle.
History & facts. Mobile devices are today the central data stores of everyday life and thus highly relevant forensically — but at the same time hard to access due to strong encryption and closed operating systems. Investigations distinguish, depending on depth, between a logical acquisition (what the device releases via its interfaces) and a physical acquisition (a deeper image). Which method is possible depends heavily on the model, operating system version and encryption state.
Outlook & recommendation. The race between device hardening and access methods continues; what succeeds with one model fails with the next. Legally and ethically the intervention is especially delicate, since mobile devices allow deep insights into privacy — preserving proportionality and the chain of custody is particularly important here. In practice: preserve the device state (do not let it lock), control radio connections and clarify early which acquisition is achievable at all.
